One surety the Red Rocker rose to the top was by his own song writing skills, be they only fractional in terms of his talent. It was showing up even pre-Montrose days. He’s already onto the next, churning out yet more lyrics as you’re reading this review. HALF WAY TO MEMPHIS and SOME DAY are nothing short of inspirational, tinged with a slow, passionate depth that only Hagar can convey. The CD screams sun, ocean, boats, the coast, and love – just like the cover shows - and even coils around a streak of sea exploration history; by Sammy’s soft reference to Cortez, Magellan, Sir Francis Drake in the background of my second favorite, SAILIN’, he gently leads your imagination into the far away past, where legendary explorers sailed the very waves at which he must have been gazing writing this song. The irony is held fast by a legend himself naming aloud other greats who have come before him.
