This is David Lee Roth's latest cd before he got back together again with Van Halen in 2007. He does numerous cover tunes from the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, and even the Beatles on this one, and the cover that he does sound really unique, unlike any of Dave's other work on any cd that he has released. The other songs on it are like what he did on his first solo cd right after he left Van Halen that is called "Crazy From The Heat". There is not a lot of guitar like he did with Steve Vai on "Eat'em And Smile" and "Skyscraper", so it is not as hard rock sounding as he could actually be. I like Roth best when he has that Van Halen/Vai hard rock sounding guitar vibe in his music, and you will not find that here on this cd from him.
I would have given this CD a rating of "Excellent" If it wasn't for some self-indulgent mindless inclusions (although They did make me laugh)and the fact that this is pretty much a Cover Tunes album.. Most of the Song Titles are changed (Not sure why), But none the less the songs are there. The first 3 songs, all Savoy Brown covers are Great (Maybe because I'm a big "Savoy" Fan)and Daves voice suits them well. The next Track is the Steve Miller Song "Shuba Da Du Ma Ma" (called Shoo bop here)and again is a great match for Dave's voice. "She's Looking Good" Sounds like a Van Halen throw away track without the "coolness" of a VH song. The Doors song, "Soul Kitchen" takes one back to the Hey "Daze" of the doors at full Power and Hendrix's "If 6 was 9" elevates us to another dimension and mind space. "Tomorrow never knows" is another song that is better If the listener is at a "Higher" level of consciousness due to the help of outside "Buds". Medicine man is just silly, but may make You laugh along with Dave at the end of the snippet. "Let it all Hang out" could have been a Great Song on any of DLR's earlier albums and may be the closest of all the Tunes to capture Dave's "Swagger". Thug Pop is another catchy Track and enjoyable to listen to. without getting into the rest of the album and bringing out the hard criticism, I will stop here and just say that with all of it's foibles, This is one of my more likeable Post-Syscaper albums by Mr. Roth.Read full review
I pretty much have liked everything that Dave has done with both Van Halen and in his solo career (some much better than others though). This release isn't very common, in fact you may only see one or two listings for it in a months time on ebay. It was sold in very low numbers and is now out-of-print (OOP). Pretty much cover tunes w/ a couple originals mixed in for good measure, the songs that were chosen for this title really do fit Dave's vocal range well. He does a really good job on almost all of these songs, except for the Jimi Hendrix tune "If 6 was 9" (sorry, didn't like the way it was re-arranged), & "Medicine Man" (which was pretty much a waste of time). My favorites were the beginning song by Savoy Brown "You Got The Blues Not Me" & his remake of the Van Halen classic "Ice Cream Man" (with a little bit of re-wording done on it). All-in-all, if your a Dave fan then you'll find that this cd is a must own, if you like blues music then you may be interested in hearing this too. For the low price, this cd is definately worth getting.Read full review
Think about this album as the "Crazy From the Heat EP" part 2. It is a covers album, all songs played in the same style as Just a Gigollo and Easy Street. So if you liked that EP you will love this one. The production is great, and dave still owns it.
Not his best offering. It's remotely interesting as a cover album, and there are a few good moments back and forth, but it pales in comparison to albums like Eat Em and Smile, A Little Aint Enough and DLR Band. It's a hit or miss affair here, mostly miss, but a few numbers back and forth are interesting. All in all, basically average.
