On this fine album Johnny Cash sings with amazing power and emotion. His voice has always seemed like an ancient thing, and so the years haven't taken too much of a toll on it. The instrumentation is generally sparse and heavy. No unnecessary fiddles or pedal steels here. It almost seems like a stretch to call this a "country" album. "Roots" might be a more fitting description. Anyway, it transcends any particular genre. I would rate this one as an unequivocal masterpiece, but (for my taste) it runs too heavily into overtly religious material. I suppose that reflects Mr. Cash's personal mindset, and I can't fault him for that. Doing exactly what he wants is the man's trademark, after all. It just does't resonate with me. That said, Rusty Cage alone is worth the price of admission. When Johnny covers this one, you get a sense he's singing about his tired and battered physical self.Read full review
