British Hard Rock/Rock'n'Rollers Slade originally released their SLAYED? LP in 1972. The band was very English in both musical style and presentation; which is definitely part of their charm (notwithstanding the fact that they were strongly influenced by American Rock & Soul). Slade was more or less a party band; and was considered as part of the Glam Rock scene of the early 70's. Well, they were none too glamorous in my book- their outrageous clothes and costumes came across as bizarre to this American, and I would bet that most Americans would feel the same.... hee, hee. Their music and antics were somewhat geared towards a young audience at this stage of their career. None of which takes away from the fact that these guys were a whale of a lot of fun ! Here on SLAYED? they rave it up with Noddy Holder's screamed and shouted (but tuneful) vocals, a powerful, chugging rhythm section, and their well known crunchy, ringing Gibson SG guitars. The guitars sound like they were recorded at an incredible volume; and the whole band sounds HUGE ! Slade released many good LPs over the years. They also wrote several great songs, along with many, many good ones. This recording is their classic. Each of the original ten songs (this CD also includes bonus tracks) is very strong; but there is one song which rises above the rest. That song is the immortal GUDBUY T'JANE. The socially astute, amusing, and yet almost poetic lyrics of the song, when heard in the context of Slade's thunderous sonic power, and brilliant guitar and vocal lines; take GUDBUY T'JANE to the heights of musical glory. This is not meant to be hyperbole, folks; the song is a bonafide Rock'n'Roll classic! GUDBUY T'JANE alone is worth the price of the CD. The bonus tracks are valuable musically; but differ slightly in style in relation to the rest of the record. Slade were masters of the Pop melody; and the whole record demonstrates that- both in regards to the album proper, and the bonus tracks. I do have a bit of a problem with the lyrics of one song, My Life Is Natural. Crass and weird. Other than that: Highly Recommended.Read full review
After 2 failed albums Slade explodes with an excellent third album that conquers the charts. The remaster version includes bonuses and a great booklet with rare photos and a lot of text that explains the period of the album and the songs. very recommended
