From his beginnings as an anonymous hired hand in the early 60's ( how many of you are old enough to remember that Russell was the arranger for Gary Lewis & The Playboys hit 'This Diamond Ring'? ), to the ringmaster of Joe Cocker's 'Mad Dogs & Englishmen', Leon Russell has done it all. Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, arranger, a veritable Renaissance man of pop music. He was at his creative peak in 1972( at least, commercially speaking ) with 'Carney'. Recording the album almost entirely at home, and playing virtually all of the instruments ( something few besides Paul McCartney and the somewhat overlooked Emmitt Rhodes, had done up to that point ), Russell crafted 12 songs that ran the gamut from blue eyed soul ( Tight Rope ) to New Orleans styled Cajun ( Cajun Love Song ), to sensitive singer-songwriter ( Me & Baby Jane ) to downright self-indulgent ( Acid Annapolis ). This is also the album on which he introduced the world to what would later become Jazz guitarist and singer George Benson's signature hit, 'This Masquerade'. Russell has recorded perhaps dozens of albums under his own name, and has been instrumental in adding his unique signiture to more artists albums than I can even remember. For the uninitiated, Carney is a great place to start catching up with Leon Russell's tremendous output of music over the past 40 plus years.Read full review
Leon came to mainstream FM radio in the early ‘70s. Played with George Harrison in the Concert for Bangladesh in 1971. Wrote Delta Lady and Joe Cocker recorded it and it was a hit. He’s best know for walking a Tightrope.

Back in the 70's my mom played her Leon Russell 8-tracks. The house was filled with music that I never forgot. I am 40 yrs. old now and I love it even more. This man is brilliant!
