Following up Whitesnake was a daunting task, as 1989's Slip of the Tongue showed. Guitarist Adrian Vandenberg suffered wrist/hand injuries and was replaced for the recording by legendary virtuoso Steve Vai, who played with Frank Zappa and was also a hired gun for David Lee Roth's band.

Finally this gets an official release
I had my misgivings about purchasing the "Live At Donington 1990" disc because of other "officially released" versions of shows from other artists that have come out lately have failed to be an upgrade over the versions that have been available on the free trade boards for years. Notably these are the "Live at LA Forum 1983" disc that came with the legacy edition of Def Leppard's "Pyromania" which actually sounds WORSE than the bootleg (how they managed that, I have no idea) and the Dio "Live At Donington" which I bought the Japanese SHM version and is only a slight improvement over the free trade versions. I am happy to say that this release is a dramatic improvement over the free trade versions. All the instruments have depth and the vocals sound great. They did stick with a very live sound in the production. Yes, that does sound stupid but this disc actually sounds like you're at a concert; the audience is up in the mix, the drums sound how they should sound at a concert. Too many live albums get produced like studio albums and lose that live vibe and feel to them but "Live At Donington 1990" actually does make you feel like you're at the show. The only issue I have with any of the performances is the Steve Vai "solo" track "For The Love Of God." It just doesn't have the same impact as live versions that I've heard with his own back up band. This could be due to the fact that Vandenberg, Sarzo and Aldridge felt that Vai treated them AS a backing band and didn't feel like putting their all into it or they're not used to performing instrumentals or a hundred other reasons but, whatever the reason, the performance on this song falls flat. Other than that, it's a great representation of live 'Snake at that moment in time and would be a worthy addition to any CD collection.Read full review
