I discovered Alice Cooper's 70s output in my teens and have always prefered it to his 80s Metal phase - the peak of this era was the Alice Cooper Band and the 5 classic albums they made for Warner Bros ("Love it to Death" through to "Muscle of Love"). If you're sold on those then it's worth checking out their two "pre-fame" albums which were recorded for Frank Zappa's Bizzarre / Straight records at the end of the 60s; "Easy Action" is the second of the two and bridges the gap between the free-form nature of the "Pretties for You" debut and the more conventional style of the "Love it...". It's still a strange listen if you've only ever heard "Poison", so be prepared. Stand-outs are the deliciously dirty riff of opener "Mr and Misdemeanor" and "Refridgerator Heaven", but there's no weak links here. "Still No Air" dabbles in the "West Side Story" leanings that came to the fore later on the "School's Out" album, while closing track "Lay Down and Die, Goodbye" is an epic psychedelic jam that ends with a cover of a song from earlier in the band's career. I've had a scratchy vinyl copy of this for many years and so it's good to hear it again on CD - a flawed but fascinating album that is recommended more for Cooper nuts than for those with a passing interest.Read full review
