Speed Metal Symphony is the first one of the two albums recorded by Cacophony, the band of two exceptionally talented guitar virtuosos, Marty Friedman and Jason Becker. An masterpiece of Neo-classical Metal, I for one think it is by far the band's best work. All songs range from excellent to mind-blowing, but the best one by far is "The Ninja" which stands out with its incredible clean intro solo. The guitarwork in the album is plain amazing, although the drums and bass could get a little more love. The vocals, on the other hand are of mediocre quality and it might have been better if there weren't any. However all of this is to be expected from a shred album, which is focused on the guitars. The highlits of the album are "Where my Fortune Lies", which has a great intro, a very good chorus (except for the vocals) , one of the best solos in the album and a mildly thrashy vibe in general. Then, "The Ninja". It starts out with an exceptional clean solo, and my favourite solo of the whole album after the 2nd chorus. Finally, Desert island, with great solos and an awesome clean interlude. All the others songs are brilliant, with the only disappointing one being the first one, "Savage", which, apart from the solo at the end is a very generic song and poor compared to the other songs in the album. All in all, I would recommend it as a classic to everyone who likes this type of metal and I personally find it superior to, "Go Off!", the band's second (and final) work.Read full review
If you like superlative, over the top, shred-o-rama, melt-your-face metal guitar, then you will will love this CD! Two guitar legends--Marty Friedman & Jason Becker--created this masterpiece of shred in the mid-80's when they were young lads fresh from the labs of GIT in LA. It's truly amazing to hear how these two mesh together so smoothly as they shred mercilessly throughout the CD. They have that neo-classical/romantic quality to their playing--without sounding like they are merely exercising through practice book scales. Not a bad tune to be had on this CD. Crank this one up and strap yourself in. You're in for a ride!!
I love this album! Friedman and Becker do a fantastic job with their vistuoso playing and the riffs are incredible! I recently got into Jason Becker and decided to buy his earliest works. Friedman is great but I'm not much of a fan. Amazing album and I recomend it for any fan of neo-classical metal or anyone who justs loves shredding solos!
Great!
