Detective's debut album was heralded at the time as "They're your Rock n Roll Godfathers" I seem to recall, being a longtime fan of singer Michael Des Barres from his Silverhead days I snapped it up and, all these years later finally got it on remastered CD. It's a cracking album if a tad dated in places but by and large it's stood the test of time well. Having signed to Led Zep's Swansong label, Detective did find themselves with a very Zep sounding Drum sound and some of the tracks are very Zep orientated in places, but the material is still very strong, album opener "Recognition" is a gentle opener but still packs a punch,"Detective Man" is classy Rock n Roll, "One more heartache" screams with anguish, "Grim Reaper" is as dark as the title suggests, "Nightingale" is a tad cheesy in the ballad dept and "Deep down" doesnt really belong here, being a somewhat languid instrumental and nothing like the rest of the tracks. Des Barres vocals are faultless throughout (he really is underated). Detective made one more album after this and that was indeed their Swansong. Id like this album to have been a little less overproduced but the power is still apparent even after all this time and one wonders if Detective really did fulfill their potential cos they had it in truckloads. If ya like 80's Rock and well constructed powerful Rocky Funky tunes then check this out.The remastered version courtesy of Rock Candy records also comes with a highly informative booklet with some great behind the scenes yarns.Read full review
