This disc - and MTV event - was a wonderful surprise for a jonesing Led Zep nut like me. I never got into The Firm or Robert's solo stuff; it just didn't have the magik... Being (mostly) acoustic was a pleasant twist, adding the Egyptian then London musicians was great! Who knew Four Sticks could rock like that with no actual Edison-inspired voltage involved? Wow. When the string section of the London Metropolitan Orchestra tore into their up-tempo closing riffs?? Fuggedaboudit. Same for the alternating gravitas and lightness they give the disc-ending Kashmir as they play off of Charlie Jones' bashing away on the skins. The haunting voice of Sandy Denny is honored and even - gasp - improved on by Najima Akhtar, one of the Egyptian ensemble during Battle of Evermore (check out her lilt after "the sunlight blinds his eyes...".) Robert displays a matured set of pipes and style - his Eastern-inspired vocals and vocalizations (Evermore, Kashmir) are a fun change of pace. Of course Jimmy's bluesy licks on the electric Since I've Been Loving You were tasty - that song has been a favorite of mine since I first saw it "live" (onscreen) from The Song Remains the Same. Passion, Pain and Power. Yup. 5 Stars from this unrepentant Zeppelin junkie! JVRead full review
I lost this CD in a house fire and just had to have another copy. Terrific CD. Enjoy the different versions of Led Zeppelin songs and adore "Yallah" which was new. Jimmy Page always produces the very best.
